This was a wonder to watch. Read the statement as soon as it is released at wesleyan.org..

holy smoke is it strong! Some right-wing "hang the Mexicans" dittoheads will go up in smoke and think their denomination has gotten liberal when actually we have simple gotten Biblical...

Anbd, kudos to the careful and powerful statements of Jerry Pence from the shotgun-chair--JP has been a strong supporter of taking a Biblical stand on these things all along, not just a knew-jerk political one.

Few will ever forget powerful statements from latinos on the floor... Latinos (both legal and undocumented) are no longer "them" but "us"--delegates, pastors, members of our denomination... family.

This is one of the best Biblical and thoughtful responses to the discussion that I've read. It will preach. It should be preached.

"As Wesleyans, we will unashamedly engage in both evangelizing and discipling immigrants in our communities, training and appointing immigrant persons as pastors, lay leaders and workers, with respect for applicable employment laws as we do."

If I read this correctly, undocumented immigrants should not be employed by Wesleyan churches because that would be a violation of employment laws, but they can serve in any unpaid capacity. Is that accurate?

WCH: That is precisely how I read it and I understand how it was intended...
